We use the Uganda National Curriculum themes in Primary classes 1, 2 and 3. At Entarataambe, the way we teach and learn is very different from ‘chalk and talk’ whereby pupils sit in rows facing a teacher, chanting and copying, becoming mere passive recipients of information with little participation. Instead, we use active learning methods, for example, co-operating with a partner or working in a group to discuss how to solve a mathematics problem or carry out a science investigation; students may read in small groups with their teacher in guided reading, or practise and use critical thinking skills when reasoning or making decisions about how to carry out a task. Student talk for learning, such as ‘think, pair, share’ (TPS), is a key component in improving confidence, engagement and understanding. Where possible, lessons are conducted outside the classroom to enhance hands-on learning through direct experience and engagement with the natural environment.
