Entarataambe school is set within several acres of farmland near Itojo, Ntungamo District, including cattle pastures, fish ponds and crops such as matooke (green bananas), cassava and millet. Our students have a unique opportunity to learn all aspects of organic agriculture and economic well-being. On the school site, there is a smaller garden where students plant and tend a variety of vegetables to enhance their lunchtime meals.

Through cross-curricular projects, students can learn many skills such as soil composition and conservation, natural organic and traditional ways to control pests, changing seasons and climate patterns, adaptation to climate change, set-up costs, profit margins and marketing, as well as patience, perseverance and problem-solving. They can experience the joy of sharing the food they have grown and of contributing to tasty, nutritious school meals.

We use positive discipline to support pupils in making good choices about their behaviour so they can understand and take responsibility for the way they conduct themselves, instead of acting out of fear of punishment. They learn that what they say and do affects others as well as themselves. We aim to create a learner-friendly environment, free from intimidation, fear or humiliation, in which children can ask questions, explore concepts and ideas and are free to take risks with their learning, understanding that making mistakes is part of the learning process and develops resilience.
